Ipho, physics, olympiad, international physics olympiad

Four high school students will be the Philippines’ representatives at the 2019 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).
•This year marks the 50th year of the IPhO, which will take place in Tel Aviv, Israel from July 7 to 15, 2019.
•Last year, the Philippine team bagged a silver medal and two bronze medals, ranking 34th out of 87 delegations.

Following the Philippine team’s promising performance at last year’s International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), another team of bright young Pinoys is set to participate in the 50th edition of the prestigious science competition.

Quark-y quartet

This year, the Philippine’s delegates will be Steven Reyes from St. Jude Catholic School, Caelan Joseph Consing and Lorenzo Gabriel Joquino from Philippine Science High School (PSHS-Main), and Allan Mesa Jr. from Manila Science High School (MSHS). This is Reyes’ second time to join the Philippine delegation, having won a silver medal at last year’s IPhO. Meanwhile, Mesa is the first student from MSHS to join the Philippine IPhO delegation in 23 years.

The four young physics whizzes will compete under the supervision of team leaders Perry Esguerra and Vinni Dajac. To prepare them for the IPhO, the students received training under mentors Dajac (PSHS-Main), Russel Odi (St. Jude), and Ferdinand Bautista (MSHS).

Dajac, who won a bronze medal for the Philippines at the 2006 IPhO in Singapore, is the first former IPhO contestant to lead the Philippine team.

Last year, the Philippine team brought home a silver medal and two bronze medals, and placed 34th out of 87 participating teams.

Unstoppable forces

The 50th IPhO will take place from July 7 to 15 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The IPhO is an annual gathering of secondary school students from around the world to compete against each other in a set of individual theoretical and laboratory physics exams. The first-ever IPhO took place in 1967 in Warsaw, Poland, and featured delegates from 5 countries.

The 2019 IPhO marks the 14th time the Philippines joined the competition, having first participated in 1993. Each time, at least one student from PSHS-Main represented the Philippines.
