DOST, DOST-SEI, scholarship, junior, JLSS

The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) is now accepting applicants for its 2020 Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program via its e-application portal, science-scholarships.ph.

Who can apply for the JLSS Program?

DOST-SEI created its JLSS Program for incoming regular third year college students (AY 2020-2021) enrolled in priority S&T courses. You may check the official list to see which courses are included here.

There are three component programs of the JLSS:

1) The RA 7687 program provides for talented students who are under a certain socioeconomic status.

2) The Merit program is a scholarship opportunity for students with high STEM aptitude.

3) The RA 10612 program aims to accelerate the production of STEM teachers in secondary schools.

Scholarship privileges include a monthly stipend (PHP 7,000), tuition subsidy (up to PHP 40,000 per academic year) for those enrolled in private higher education institutions, PHP 10,000 book allowance per academic year, PHP 1,000 graduation allowance, fare for one economy-class roundtrip per year (for those studying away from their home province), PHP 10,000 thesis allowance, and group accident insurance.

Empowering Pinoy STEM professionals

Like DOST-SEI’s other S&T scholarship programs, the JLSS program aims to fast track the production of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professionals in the Philippines.

“In this incredibly challenging time, we need a continuous supply of scientists and engineers who can use scientific knowledge to address basic human needs,” said DOST-SEI Director Josette Biyo in an official statement. “We hope JLSS would also help in producing more brilliant and dedicated teachers, ensure that our students get quality science and mathematics education, and even encourage these teachers to become innovators themselves.”

Graduates of the JLSS-RA 7687 and JLSS-Merit programs must render service in the Philippines after graduation, within their field of expertise.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) will prioritize JLSS-RA 10612 graduates for job placement in Philippine high schools. They may teach STEM subjects (Special Science Teacher I status) even without Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) eligibility. However, they must pass the LET within five years from their hire date to continue their employment under DepEd.

Interested and qualified students may apply and upload requirements at https://www.science-scholarships.ph/.

The deadline for filing is on April 30, 2020. The nationwide examination will take place on June 7, 2020.
