Glass falls under the category of amorphous solids, a state somewhere between solids and liquids. That’s because glass doesn’t have the long-range order (the pattern in which a material’s particles are arranged, repeated periodically across its entirety) that crystalline solids possess.

Today’s Science History Milestone: On July 6, 1885, Louis Pasteur successfully tested his rabies vaccine. Despite the fact that he was not a licensed physician, he administered it on a boy named Joseph Meister, who was bitten by a rabid dog. The vaccine worked, saving the boy from death (and Pasteur from lawsuits).
