DOST, RSTW

The Department of Science and Technology-MIMAROPA (DOST-MIMAROPA) will soon shine the spotlight on science and technology in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

The Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) will take place at the Seasons Hotel and Convention Center in Occidental Mindoro from October 10 to 12, 2018. With the RSTW, DOST aims to bring science and technology initiatives to the forefront in the MIMAROPA region. Set to be a three-day celebration, the RSTW will showcase science and technology (S&T) programs and projects, innovations, and research and development (R&D) outputs. The event will bear the theme “Innovation for Collective Prosperity.”

“Innovation for Collective Prosperity”

The RSTW will feature technology forums on the economic potentials of the region. These will focus on industries such as salt farming, wood and bamboo-based products, and smart agriculture. They will also tackle other new food technologies like iron-fortified rice and stabilized brown rice, as well as trends and breakthroughs on food safety and wastewater treatment technologies for the benefit of the region’s local establishments.

Meanwhile, exhibits will highlight new advances and trends in technology. They will also feature the other programs, services, and projects by DOST-MIMAROPA and other agencies.

In addition, the event will include a roundtable discussion on efficiently protecting and conserving the critically-endangered Mindoro dwarf buffalo (otherwise known as the tamaraw).

DOST highlights science and technology

DOST will work with the UP-DREAM Program/Phil-LiDAR 1 to provide a training workshop for local disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) officers. This training will equip them with crucial skills in using flood hazard maps effectively. This will be a 3-day training session at Sikatuna Beach Hotel. DOST will simultaneously launch the transponder technology for early warning systems or hydromet sensors for MIMAROPA’s remote areas.

The event also seeks to address the R&D gaps in the region’s State Colleges and Universities (SUCs). Alongside the other events, the Sci-fun Caravan: Travelling Science Centrum will take place at San Jose Municipal Gymnasium. Targeted at both students and teachers, this initiative seeks to enhance their knowledge of basic science concepts, processes, and phenomena.

Lastly, a bazaar will showcase products of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises that DOST assisted via its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). Exemplary SETUP adopters in MIMAROPA will also receive awards at the event.
