FlipFact of the Day: There’s an actual term for severe cases of being unable to get out of bed, and it’s not “laziness” or “Mondays.”

According to Dr. Mark Salter from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, dysania is sometimes observed in people who are suffering from a major depressive disorder. (Meanwhile, clinomania is a related term that refers to one’s desire to just stay in bed the entire day.)

Experts believe that dysania is usually a symptom of depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, or some other underlying illness. However, because it’s not a medically recognized illness, you probably can’t use it as an excuse for not showing up at work or school.

Today’s Science History Milestone: On July 16, 1994, fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 began colliding with Jupiter, ending on July 22. It was the first collision of two solar system bodies ever to be observed.
